Garbage crisis: Dompe protesters teargassed

Police fired tear gas and water cannon in a bid to disperse demonstrators who were protesting attempts to transport garbage collected from Colombo to a site in Maligawatta, Dompe this evening. 

Authorities have been trying to dump garbage collected from Colombo at garbage dumps in several locations since the decision to halt further dumping at Meethotamulla. However, these moves have been met with strong protests by residents of these areas.
