Colombo Fashion Week kicks off with Emerging Designers’ Showcase

16 March 2017 - 355   - 1

Day one of Colombo Fashion Week kicked off with the Emerging Designers’ Showcase yesterday  at the Hilton Colombo. Set in the Foyeur of the GRAZE restaurant, the show featured 8 new up and coming designers. Namely Dinushi Pamunuwa, Anushika Perera, Poorni Wijesinghe, Savindri Kuruppu, Vathsala Gunasekara, Marlon Rae, Mihiri De Silva, and Yathra Jayawardene.

The night saw two brands being launched when their debut collections were showcased on the runway. The brands being Dinushi Pamunuwa’s La Pard and Marlon Rae’s Maluba. We also witnessed Savindri Kuruppu’s entry into the fashion industry that night, as she presented her first ever fashion collection as a designer.

Batik and linen seemed to be the order of the night, with most collections featuring either one or both. The stand out collections were Savindri Kuruppu’s edgy yet feminine collection and Yathra Jayawardena’s collection which is an elegant take on Batik design.

Congratulations on the show. Sri Lanka is very under developed in the fashion business and there is every opportunity for designers and manufactures to make a successful business. Tourists coming to the island often look for something new to wear , not just beach clothes but something more edgy for evening, party, clubbing back home or on the island. Billions and billions of money is in the fashion industry world wide and there is every reason for Sri Lanka to start generating some of that money. You have a picture perfect island for photo shoots and Colombo is one of the fastest growing city destinations in the world. So this is a perfect time for success.
