A new leaf in the millennium

By Laila Nasry and Ruhanie Perera
Before we know it another year is over. As a new year begins, most of us are full of hope as we make our New Year resolutions and prepare to turn over a new leaf. Wise men say it's best to make
1. two resolutions and
2. to keep to the first.
This is what the rest of us have to say.

Charini Perera (19)

I used to keep resolutions all the time, like to work hard, keep my room clean, be more methodical and punctual. But somehow or the other after some time resolutions go out of the window. Because of that I make as few resolutions as possible. Next year is going to be my A/Ls so I have firmly resolved to work hard, and get into that studying mood. Other than that there is nothing much in my life that I want to change. Oh! except maybe not annoy my parents that much! I know new year a means new leaf but I believe in making resolutions when something goes wrong and to fix it I must resolve to do better. The millennium is coming up- a once in a lifetime thing and I'm excited about it, though I'm getting sick of the hype. And I'm hoping that in the millennium my resolutions will work.

Karen Herft (20)

This whole millennium thing is over exaggerated. People think something marvelous is going to happen and I'm sure they are going to be let down. This millennium I have resolved not to have any resolutions, because I can't keep any. Mine last only for a few weeks. I make resolutions when something goes wrong in my life and I have to think, shall I do this or that? But since nothing drastic has happened to scare me into any resolutions, when the 1st comes I won't be having any.

Shehla Latif (20)

I don't see any big deal about the millennium. It's just another new year. What excites me about the whole thing is the fact that I will be 21 next year! Though I don't believe in Millennium hype I believe in New year resolutions. I will be going to Uni next year and I hope to put my heart and soul into it and study hard. I also hope to be a better person. When I make resolutions I generally keep to it. However more than resolutions I like challenges, for it makes me take the effort to see myself through the difficulty.

Enoka Fernandopulle (19)

My resolution for the millennium is to take a day at a time. Actually I don't believe in them. Everybody's making this big fuss about the millennium. For me it is just another day, nothing special. I don't make strict resolutions because I can't live upto them and sometimes I forget about them. I believe, sometimes the situations one is placed in makes keeping upto resolutions difficult. What's going to happen is bound to happen, so there is really no use in resolutions.

Malika Perera(20)

I think people make resolutions when there are special occasions like weddings, birthdays, New Years etc. This year being the millennium resolutions seem more pronounced. True its the millennium, I'm excited too. We survived to see the turn of the century but the fact remains its just another year. So I haven't given much thought to resolutions. Actually resolutions depend on my mood. Right now I'm in the mood to make a change in my life, but unfortunately what I want to change is unchangeable. Like I wish to change the fact that I have to go for classes everyday! My mood changes and so does my resolutions, so there is really no point in me having resolutions. Besides I don't believe in it.

Harith Gunewardene (20)

I think the whole millennium thing is blown out of propotion. But a millennium doesn't come often so its fair enough. I usually don't make resolutions. But mine would be to get through uni, study more and party less. But I'm very poor at keeping to my resolutions. The only resolution I kept to was to pass my A/Ls.

Kishan Thomas (18)

The millennium is something to keep people occupied. Life is short and everyone wants to have a good time and it's a good excuse to have fun. I usually make resolutions. But I keep them only for around 30 days. This year I'm going to pay a lot of attention to my studies. This is a resolution I make every year. This year I will somehow keep it. I generally make small resolutions which I think I can keep but I tend to forget them. So I end up doing absolutely nothing.

Nishantha Walgampaya (20)

The millennium is totally crap. I feel most people are using it to make money. I know it's not exactly just another year but I feel it's too much. I don't believe in making New Year resolutions, because I don't think you should wait for the new year to do something you want to and have to. I'm very good at keeping all the resolutions I make. I just don't wait for the New Year to make them.
