Overseas money remittance

How a former big boss in uniform remitted into the country a small part of his 'savings' abroad is the talking point in well informed quarters of the security establishment.

The money arrived from a bank in London to a local bank located in south of the City. The recipient of the remittance was, of course, a good friend.

The amount ? Only six million rupees !!!

Prabha's illness

Even some LTTE area leaders appear to have got concerned about reports in sections of the local media that their leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was seriously ill.

Intercepts of a radio conversation this week underscored this.

Ramanan, a leader in Batticaloa rang his former boss, now a Wanni 'commander,' to say they were very concerned about reports of the leader's illness. He said cadres in the east had conducted special poojas in temples to invoke the blessings of gods for a speedy recovery.

Karuna replied that the leader had an attack of fever but had since recovered and was doing well.

Yet some military top brass do not believe the conversation is true. They say it may be a diversion.

A double agent

Thereis more news on the Tiger cadre (one of ten on a recce and sabotage mission) who surrendered to the Navy base at Kalpitiya.

He has now confessed that he was told by his Sea Tiger leader, Soosai, to surrender and play the role of a double agent !!

Plucking new recruits

Intelligence authorities are uncovering increasing evidence of a discreet recruitment campaign the LTTE has launched in plantation areas.

This is after reports that their recruitment efforts in the Wanni and the East was poor. In fact, in the east, over 250 youth have been forcibly conscripted.

Media Minister tailed

The affable Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Media, Mangala Samaraweera received a strong warning last week.

It came from intelligence channels. They said that according to their "technical sources", Tiger guerrillas were monitoring his movements. This was with the intention of planning an attack.

Time bomb

PLOT and TELO cadres in Vavuniya are bracing themselves to fight it out.

Last week, a bomb exploded at PLOT's Kovil Kulam Camp at Uma Maheswaran street killing a 13 year old. It went off at 8 am when PLOT cadres move into occupy the bunkers. At night, they withdraw to safe locations. PLOT has accused TELO cadres of placing a time bomb.
