Outstation athletes steal the limelight

Outstation athletes stole the limelight on the first day of the inaugural Lanka Lions SC track and field championships at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Despite wet conditions there was keen competition among the young athletes drawn from the outstations. Over 1,500 athletes were in the fray, which augurs well for the future of this newly formed club.

Th Minister of Sports, S.B.Dissanayake, has given his blessings and encouragement for Lanka Lions SC.

The club has not forgotten the past heroes of Sri Lanka and several challenge trophies are on offer in their names. Heading the list is the Duncan White Trophy for the district champions. N.Ethirweerasingham Trophy for the most outstanding performance of the meet (men), S.L.B.Rosa Trophy - best performance boys - U18; Nirmala Dissanayake Trophy for the most outstanding performance women; Ramani Mangalika Trophy (girls) U-16; E.K.W.Gunawardena Trophy boys U-16; Linus Dias Trophy girls U-16; P.D.Victor Trophy girls U-20; Lt. Col. W.Wimaladasa Trophy - best performance men's events; S.S.A.Dissanayake Trophy - best performance women's events; Brig. Neville Fernando Trophy - best performance girls U-20.

The meet will be continued today.

The Deputy Minister of Samurdhi Youth Affairs and Sports will be the chief guest and will give away the awards.


Kings cager finals today

Basketball lovers and spectators are assured of interesting entertainment at the finals of the Kings Lager Trophy, Kings Stout Trophy and the Bison Trophy to be worked off at the Depot Police Courts at Bambalapitiya this evening.

The run up to the finals were of poor standard due to lack of competition. Ram Sunderalingam and S.Kathirgamathamby, two stalwarts of the cager game will be felicitated at the competition.

S.Thomas' lead swim nationals

S.Thomas' Mt. Lavinia, with an aggregate of 81 points, were in the lead in the men's championships at the National Swimming and Diving Nationals on the penultimate day at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium pool yesterday.

Lying in second position were Royal College Union with 70 points while Trinity and Asian International School were tied in third place with 20 points each.

In the women's section Colombo International School Trinity were tied up in first place with 30 points followed by Royal College Union (20 pts) and St.Joseph's were third with 19 points.

H.E.Nishantha was the only record breaker in the nationals on the first day, Friday, where he erased the record held by Tivanka de Alwis in the 200 metres back-stroke event clocking 2 minutes 23.88 seconds whilst the old record stood at 2 mts. 35.67 seconds.

The nationals will be completed today.


Coaching for young cricketers

Under the National Development Plan of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, the Colombo Regional Board has organised several coaching programmes for young cricketers within the region in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam, Kalutara and Ratnapura.

This programme will be conducted by past cricketers such as Hemantha Devapriya, Asoka de Silva, Brendon Kuruppu, Champika Ramanayake and S.Don Anurasiri.

The coaching team will be headed by Malcolm Perera, Director Development of the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCSL) and Lal Thamal, Physical Therapist/Trainer of the BCCSL, who will carry out physical fitness lessons in the programmes.

The coaching programme for this month is as follows: Oct 22 - Seminar for coaches and masters-in-charge at Gankanda MV Ratnapura; Oct. 28 - Coaching programme at De Mazenod Kandana, Gampaha; Oct. 30 - Coaching programme - Kalutara (AF).


Renouk Wijemanne Champ

Renouk Wijemanne beat Samitha Ranaweera in three sets to win the 13th Trans Asia Hotel open men's singles title at the championships concluded at its Courts.

Wijemanne won the first and third sets in identical scores of 7-5 and losing the second set in another hard battle 6-7.

Manisha Abey-wardena won the women's open singles 5-1 with Dinali de Silva giving a walk over.

Dinuka Ranaweera beat Ravi Munasinghe in two straight sets 6-1,6-1 to win the boys' under 16 singles crown.

T.D Rajapaksa and Dr. C. Thuraiajah beat M. Fernando and Daya Bandara 7-6, 6-2 to win the veterans' doubles title.

Genendra Subramaniam and Lahiru Jayasuriya won the men's doubles title without a contest receiving a walk over from Arjan Perera and Chammika de Silva.
