Rare treasures on display for Vesak festival

Adding a differ ent dimension to the Vesak festival this year, an exhibition of rare Buddhist artefacts will be held at the Gangaramaya temple in Colombo.

Buddhist paintings, bronze Buddha statues , statues of Gods, elephant tusks and Buddha relics are among the exhibits. The purpose of having such an exhibition is to give all those who will be visiting Colombo this season an opportunity to view Sri Lankan history and Buddhist culture.

The exhibition which begins on May 10 will continue till the 14th. For the convenience of those travelling from the outstations the exhibition will be open twenty four hours. More than 20 bronze pictures of places of Buddhist worship carved in the most intricate manner will be on display. These rare carvings are all done by Sri Lankan craftsmen.

A collection of Gaja Muthu will be on view. From the unpolished ones to those which have been delicately separated from the tusk Gaja Muthu is known as a priceless treasure.

Three large gold plated Buddha statues, plus Buddha relics, Seevali relics, and relics of Arahats placed in chambers and a large Pandal depicting Purisa Dhamma Sarathi and Ashtaloka Dharmaya are among the other noteworthy exhibits.
