Test stars lift SSC to the sky

Home team takes commanding first innings lead over Bloomfield

By Marlon Fernandopulle

Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunge stroked a monumental 192 and helped Singhalese Sports Club take a commanding first innings lead over Bloomfield at the end of the third day in the Division One Final and asssured cricket fans that his team will bring back the the P.Saravanamuttu Trophy to Maitland Place.

Together with Test opener Marvan Atapattu (179), Ranatunge added 259 runs for the fourth wicket as SSC snatched the initiative and knocked out the defending champions from the race.

The home side piled on the agony as Hemantha Wickremaratne joined the run fiesta with an energertic 60 in 76 balls, as Bloomfield were sent on a leather hunt by the home side which went on to amass 582.

However, it was skipper Ranatunge who stole the show yesterday and entertained the sparse crowd. In the midst of a purple patch in his batting Arjuna cut, drove and pulled with power and precision timing to compile a majestic century.

It was Ranatunge's second century in his two games for SSC this season after he scored a century against Moors SC earlier in the season.

The usually penetrative Bloomfield attack was made a mockery as Ranatunge scored freely on both sides of the wicket hitting one six and 26 boundaries in his 292 ball innings before square cutting Ruwan Kalpage to cover point for Ruchira Paliyaguru to take an easy catch.

Earlier Marvan Atapattu who was unbeaten on 155 was dismissed for 179 which included 26 boundaries. Ruchira Perera (3/94) Ruchira Paliyaguru (3/77) and Ruwan Kalpage(3/127) shared the wickets for Bloomfield.

Trailing by a massive 269 runs on the first innings Bloomfield were 32 for 1 by the close in their second innings.

SSC last won the Division One plum in 1994-95 when they were declared joint champions with Bloomfield.

Petersons dazzle but Havelocks triumph in the end

By Bernie Wijesekera

Havelocks pulled off a 30-15 win over Petersons in a keenly contested Carlsberg Trophy A Division rugby match at Havelock Park yesterday.

Havelocks points were made up of six tries while the Petersons points came off a goal, a try and a penalty.

The scoreline is no indication of the relentless fight that the blackshirts staged. Havelocks led 20-3 at the breather.

During the initial stages Havelocks played cohesive rugby and made deep inroads to their opponents territory. Leading the attack was centre Haren Perera who paved the way for four unconverted tries.

The first was scored by second rower T.J.Janiela, who played for the CH&FC last year. The second and third tries for the Havelocks came due to the individual brilliance of winger Sanjewa Jayasinghe. It was no let-up when Havelocks scored their fourth try through Thushara Jayalath, which was also unconverted.

The Petersons defence was in complete tatters in the first half and the only points that the Petersons were able to score in this half was a penalty through Opethi Tharuwa, despite winning a lot of good ball.

But soon after the 'turn-around', Havelocks went further ahead when fullback, former Peterite Shantha Dharmaratne formed the overlap to score an unconverted try (25-3).

From here onwards the Petersons found their rhythm when they put the Havelocks defence under severe pressure with some dazzling rugby.

Two tries resulted through centre Opethi Tharuwa and the second by Manasa Qoro who replaced Nagata during the dying stages of the game to barge over the Havies line. Colin Dinesh added the extra points to make it 25-15.

Just before the long whistle T.J.Taniela picked up a loose ball from his own territory to run 30 metres before slipping the ball over to scrum half Leonardde Zilwa to give the Havelocks a rousing 30-15 win.

Police sink Navy

By Saif Izzadeen

Police SC after going down fighting to Havelocks (15-24) last week, found their winning touch, when they scored 27 points (three tries and four penalties) to 3 points (one penalty) win over Navy SC in a Carlsberg inter club A Division rugby match at Police Park last evening. The Winners lead 18-0 at lemons.

The sailors who were returning to big time rugby after a four year lay-off, showed that they have not lost touch with the game as they managed to restrict the much fancied Police SC for only 27 points in the entire game. Navy also showed that their defence was made up of stern stuff when they didn't allow Police to cross their goal line in the second half.

The match got off to a lackluster start with both teams not playing up to expectations. However the deadlock was broken in the 15th minute, Police won a five metre scrum which saw no 8 Lalith Leelaratne barging through the Navy defence to score a try mid left. The conversion was missed by Ajantha Rodrigo which helped Police to take a 5-0 lead. In the 22nd minute. Police went into a 8-0 lead through 30 metre penalty by Ajantha Rodrigo.

Four minutes later saw the try of the match as the Police SC's three quarter line swung into action from the Navy 25, which saw wing three quarter Sampath Galewela going over for a try by right corner flag. The conversion was fluffed by Ajantha Rodrigo to give Police a 13-0 lead. Few minutes before the short whistle Police took a convincing 18-0 lead through a try by Aruna de Silva. Ajantha Rodrigo missed the conversion.

The second half saw Navy playing some good rugby which had the Police team guessing. They attacked the Police goal line on numerous occasions but lacked the finish, for any of their moves to bear fruit. In the seventh minute of the second half Police stretched their lead to 21-0 through a 30 metre penalty by Rodrigo. Navy reduced the lead to 21-3 also through a 30 metre penalty by Jeffry Jamalon in the 12th minute.

Police tightened their grip on the game with another two penalties in the 31st and dying minutes of the game. The two penalties was put over by Ajantha Rodrigo which gave Police a 27-0 win. Refree:Oliver Fernando.

Yardley's position in the balance

By M.H.M. Manasique

Among some officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, there is speculation that the two year contract of Sri Lankan cricket coach Bruce Yardley, was to be reviewed.

Yardley, a former Australian Test spin bowler, was given a two-year contract by the Cricket Board to coach the Sri Lankan national team.

Some Board officials say that Yardley's predecessor, Dev Whatmore, was very much better.

It was under Whatmore's coaching that the Sri Lanka won the World Cup.

According to some sources, Yardley's two-year contract has the provision for termination by either party, within the two year period.

The dispute over Yardley worsened recently after some of his statements were seen as unwarranted.
