Marvan marvels again

Marvan Atapattu, struck an elegant century to guide SSC to a first innings victory over Tamil Union in a P. Sara Trophy game at the Saravanamutthu Stadium yesterday.

The stylish right hander compiled 106 in160 balls thus helping SSC overtake Tamil Union’s 312 in the first innings.

Atapattu had 13 boundaries and a six in his century. He was associated in two productive stands. First he put on 80 for the 3rd wicket with Anura Gunawardena (26) and later added 92 for the 5th wicket with Hemantha Wickramaratna (77).

Tamil Union spinners Muthiah Muralitharan (5/120), Upul Chandana & (2/66) Niroshan Bandaratileke (2/54) were the chief wicket takers.

Medium pacer Ravindra Pushpakumara claimed six wickets haul for NCC to send CCC tumbling to 148 all out at Maitland Crescent yesterday.

Chasing NCC’s first innings total of 362 all out the CCC batsmen were in trouble as Pushpakumara struck a deadly length with his medium pacers. Pushpakumara finished with 6 for 59 as CCC were forced to follow on 214 runs behind. At the close the home side had reached 52/2.

An eighth wicket partnership of 55 runs between Anush Perera (51) and Manoj Perera (28) helped Sebastianites to take first innings points against Colts SC in a Sara trophy game at Havelock Park yesterday.

Resuming from their overnight 70 for no loss Sebastianites were sent reeling by Colts medium pacer Dulip Liyanage (3/71) & off spinner Tilan Samaraweera (4/55) to be (154/8) at one stage. But Anush Perera and Manoj Perera put on a half century stand and took the visitors past the Colts total of 194.

Colts batting for the second time were 110/3 at stumps. Romesh Kaluwitarana batting at Number 04 for his club struk a whirlwind 45 off 50 balls that included 8 boundaries. Opener Chaminda Mendis was unbeaten on 52 at the close.

Police SC were strongly placed in their Sara trophy encounter against BRC at Police park yesterday.

Nihal Soysa (5/44) and P.K. Serasinghe (3/35) ripped through the BRC batting line up to bowl them out for 123 in their first innings, 35 runs short of the police total.

Police consolidated their position further as they hit up 155/5 in their second innings by the close.

Bloomfield sitting pretty

Panadura SC were badly placed on the second day of their Sara Trophy encounter with Bloomfield C.C. played at Panadura yesterday.

In reply to BloomfieldÕs first innings score of 403 Panadura were 266 for 9.

Hashan World No. 7

Sri LankaÕs middle order batsman Hashan Tillekaratne has hit the World Cricket rankings with 731 points being placed seventh in the rankings released in London, yesterday.

Tillekaratne is ahead of Pakistan’s Inzamam-Ul Haq, West Indian Shewin Campbell and England’s skipper Mike Atherton.

Meanwhile, Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath’s performance in the current Test series against the West Indies has shot him to the top of the international bowling rankings.

He has jumped up from 10th, while previous number one Curtly Ambrose of the West Indies has dropped to fourth - his lowest position for five years.

Pakistan leg-spinner Mustaq Ahmed is second and South African fast bowler Allan Donald, third.

Dominic Cork who is missing the current tour of Zimbabwe, is England’s top bowler in 15th place.

Australia’s Steve Waugh still heads the batting rankings but South Africa’s Gary Kirsten has climbed from 11th to second.

England’s top batsman is skipper Michael Atherton in 10th place.

Kurunegala who scored 334 all out in the first innings were in a commanding position when they dismissed Kalutara for 142 and forced them to follow on. Kalutara were 85 for 2 at stumps.
