Search on for missing sailors

The Navy is yet to locate a fishing trawler that disappeared at sea on September 17 with six Navy personnel on board, a spokesman
said recently.

The sailors were on patrol duty aboard the vessel and had reportedly radioed back saying they were going after a suspicious movement, before they vanished. They were not heard from afterwards and the boat was not found.

It is suspected that they had experienced engine trouble and got caught in strong currents in Sri Lanka’s southern waters, where they were deployed.

While the Navy has mapped the currents to determine in which direction the vessel may have drifted, due to the vast expanse of sea in that area, it has been difficult to carry out an effective search, the spokesman added. Air searches have also been carried out.
