Preparing to celebrate: The Prestantia School’s junior choir

2022 marks a very musical ten years for the Prestantia School of Music. Founded by Dr Priyeshni Peiris Perera, an alumnus of the Texas Tech University in the USA, with the hope of advancing music education in Sri Lanka, the school’s two choirs have seen notable success.

On Saturday, October 15, they will celebrate the past decade with a concert, where the choirs and many prize-winning students will take the stage.

Dr Perera decided to set up the school in Moratuwa as many music schools were based in Colombo. Prestantia offers a wide range of courses such as vocal training, piano, guitar, and violin.

The show with a mix of choral items and instrumentals will also see the premiere of an original song composed by Dr Perera and Wasantha Kumara Geekiyanage, the choir’s voice instructor. An interesting fusion of classical music with eastern music, Dr Perera adds, “It’s a hopeful song and I think it suits the current climate.”

The show will also feature songs from the classics to well-loved musicals.

Guest performances by the choir of  Royal Central College in Polonnaruwa and the choir from the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, Ratmalana are something to look out for.

Prestantia has raised funds for the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in the past few years so it felt right to also give them the opportunity to display their talent, Dr. Perera says. Fourteen-year-old Chethaitwa Wijetunge who joined the school at the age of five along with other members of the leadership team are responsible for putting the concert together.

Proceeds of the show will be in aid of their Music Instruments Project to Rural School districts.

The concert will take place on Saturday, October 15 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7 pm. Tickets are priced at Rs 1500, Rs 1000, Rs 800, and Rs 300 (balcony).
