Sri Lanka trade unions through its global representative IndustriALL Global Union has this week asked President Ranil Wickremesinghe to protect the rights of trade unions as the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) has not been convened in recent months and their offices broken into.

It was pointed out in the letter that the Minister has not been convening a meeting of the NLAC to discuss labour law reforms.

The letter also notes that the head office of the Free Trade Zones and General Service Employees Union of which General Secretary is Anton Marcus, situated in Borella “has been broken into twice in the last two months”.

In this respect IndustriALL urged authorities to take measures to protect trade union rights in the country.

They further noted that they hope authorities will not propose any labour law reforms until the meeting of the NLAC is convened.
