The first International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Sri Lanka, the H.V. Perera QC Memorial Moot Court Competition also known as the Victor’s Moot was held virtually last month with participants from Sri Lanka, India and Singapore.

Teams from APIIT Law School, CfPS Law School, Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, India, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, India, Royal Institute, Colombo, Singapore Management University, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo and Horizon Campus took part.

The competition organised by the Moot Society of the Sri Lanka Law College was first held in 2018.

“The vision of Victor’s Moot is to provide all legal students the ideal platform to engage with other law students and their international counterparts in head-to-head competition,” said  Chairperson of the organising committee, Pravin Jayasundere who organized the fifth edition alongside his fellow final year students.

Head of Finance, Ashwini Pereira said that the Victor’s Moot competition will not only bring promising exposure to law students who will be potential stakeholders of mega multinational corporate litigations but also provide them a strong foundation in understanding international problems.

“We are quite proud to have pulled off an ‘international’ moot court and although it may only seem like it was just regional participants, this is a step forward in the right direction for arbitration moot courts, especially in Sri Lanka,” said Head of Logistics, Dinal Jayamaha.

It was a long-drawn process as preparations for the Moot Court began in September 2021, Head of Participation Protocol and Registration, Shakila Handunpathirana, shared.

The competition was supported by USAID with sponsorship by Tokyo Cement, the Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP) and MyCola.
