The Hayleys group has pioneered in manufacturing low Carbon Alumium ‘Ozon’ at the state of the art melting facility at Sapugaskana with an investment of over Rs. 1 billion for export to countries such as the US, UK. Australia, Europe and Canada, said Alumex PLC Managing Director Hayleys Pramuk Dediwela at the launch of a new Alumex product held at the Kingsbury Hotel Colombo recently.

He said Alumex, a low Carbon product, was launched in Sri Lanka to reduce greenhouse gas emission and to reduce carbon foot print to the environment in keeping in line with world global warming standards. Given the high demand from overseas buyers for Ozon billets, the low carbon exports can generate export revenue to the country.

Meanwhile a further expansion of the Alumex facility is expected to commence through a second phase. The new facility enables Alumex to produce the highest quality aluminum billets utilising 5 per cent of the total energy consumed in primary aluminum manufacturing from bauxite. Further automation driven optimisation is expected to cut energy consumption by up to 20 per cent. Alumex is expected to add new life to the Sri Lankan construction sector to reduce carbon footprint.

Hayleys Chairman/CEO Mohan Pandithage said given the predicament of the country’s economic situation it is their responsibility to step forward and lead through investment and innovation. The Alumex team has strengthened sustainable manufacturing operations with solutions that can compete on global stage, while reducing the energy consumption of carbon emissions and contributing to a clear environment. By exporting low carbon products to South Asian and global markets the strategy is to create a social and environment governance and for a better future.

Prof. Nanda Munasinghe of the Moratuwa University in his presentation said that unlike steel, aluminum is corrosion resistant and can be used for a longer period of time. Recycling of aluminum is done without reducing its property. Aluminum is used for construction of high tension wires and is known to be better than copper. Steel is gradually being phased out and aluminum is used worldwide instead. Even the components of modern aircrafts are manufactured with aluminum as steel components are heavy. This is the first time low carbon products has been launched and some countries are willing to pay a premium price for such products for exports.
