Most foreign buyers insist SL must abide by human rights rules

Most buyers from foreign countries such as Germany insist that their suppliers abide by human rights conventions. Other European and West Asian countries and Japan too insist that Sri Lankans are ethically trained and have good governance, according to Shiham Marikar, Secretary General/CEO of the National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) speaking at a media briefing in Colombo this week to announce the 30th NCE Export Awards.

He said that for the past 29 years the NCE was able to conduct their annual awards event without a break to motivate exporters. The number of applications for the NCE awards has increased by 60 per cent this year and will be judged by a panel of judges drawn from the Export Development Board (EDB), Customs, CIMA, CA Sri Lanka and SLIM and a host of other organisations that conduct the judging process of awards. An online application has been created for participants to send their applications directly to the committee of judges.

Ravi Jayawardena, NCE President, said the Export Council of Ministers should be restored if the Sri Lankan government believes the country should move forward with an export-led economy.

Exporters have done yeomen service to national development of the country but face a huge problem with shortage of foreign exchange and power crises that looms large that does not seem to end soon. As a result exporters have faced huge operational costs during the past year, he said.

The recent announcement made by the President that employees of the public sector should quit if they are not productive enough does not seem to augur well, he added. This could bring untold suffering to their families when the breadwinner loses his job. However the taxpayers are also supporting unproductive state employees and the solution to the problem lies if state employees are given five years no pay leave to find overseas employment.

Even if such state employees were to remain here and start a small business they should be allowed to do so. This will reduce the burden of the government expenditure to a great extent. But there are exceptions such as the Police, Armed Services, Excise and the Customs that cannot provide such leave.

Even those young talented persons involved in Aragalaya should be encouraged to engage in business outsourcing to earn money. All what they need is a desk, chair and a computer. There are so many establishments in the world looking for persons to engage in outsourcing work, he said.
