Tourism industry readying for good winter traffic

Sri Lanka is looking to have a good season this winter (December) when tourist numbers are expected to increase as a result of the relaxation of travel advisories following the government announcement that there will not be an extension of the emergency regulations in the country.

France was the first to relax the travel advisory from only essential travel to exercise caution this week as a result of this the industry expects other European markets to follow suit accordingly.

The French advisory has stated that their nationals maintain a high level of vigilance when travelling in Sri Lanka and avoid gatherings; and use a local travel agency for inland travel. The good thing is that if the emergency is being relaxed then all the countries will lift the travel advisories, Tourist Hotels Association President M. Shanthikumar told the Business Times.

He explained that this relaxation of the travel advisories will mean a positive sign for winter bookings and would make it possible for the country to achieve one million tourist arrivals by the end of this year.

Winter season for tourist traffic from December to March is a key period when tourist arrivals hit a peak in Sri Lanka.

And with the absence of petrol and diesel queues the industry hopes this will continue as the situation has improved a lot, he noted.

In supporting the government towards a faster recovery the industry is acting responsibly reducing their dependence on imported items, Mr. Shanthikumar said.

Until July Sri Lanka has attracted 458, 670 tourists and in the next few months the industry is positive they will be able to generate higher numbers as a result of the improving conditions in the country.

Sri Lanka imposed emergency regulations on July 13 soon after the former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa fled the country following public protests calling for his resignation.
