Internationally awarded filmmaker, Vimukthi Jayasundara to enter Indian cinema as a director and producer making a joint production.

Eleeanora Images Pvt. Ltd  based in Delhi- Bombay- Bhubaneshwar one of the major film producers in India has invited Vimukthi Jayasundara for business partnerships to produce his films and also to co- produced Sri Lankan and south Asian films.

CEO of the company Nila Madhab Panda met Vimukthi at last Goa international film festival who participated as a juror and started discussion about possible partnership. Vimukthi has gone to Mumbai for further discussions and MOU is to be signed as a first collaboration. Vimukthi is in development of a film together with two Indian writers Saptica Ramanjum and Aditya Rawal and it is to be shot in various locations in and around India, Sri Lanka and Europe.

Started as a journalist Vimukthi entered cinema and later joined  Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains, in France to study it. His directorial debut, The Forsaken Land won the prestigious Caméra d’Or Prize at the Cannes Festival in 2005, the first Sri Lankan to reach such a height at Cannes. ‘Between Two Worlds,’  (2009) his second feature film, was selected for the International Competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2009, while ‘Mushrooms’ was screened in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes in 2011. Among his other films are ‘Light in the Yellow Breathing Space’ (2012), ‘Chatrak’ (2011) and Vide pour l’amour (2003).

Last year Vimukthi represented Sri Lanka as one of the International Competition jury member of the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The festival was held from November 20 to 28 and he sat with other IFFI jury members including renowned Iranian filmmaker Rakhshan Banietemad, British film producer Stephen Woolley, Indian producer-director Nila Madhab Panda and Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra.

Vimukthi was also invited to be at the Jury of GWFF Best First Feature Award of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (BIFF) in Germany in January. This was the first time a Sri Lankan film artiste is sitting at the jury of the BIFF, which is one of the “Big Five” film festivals that include Cannes, Venice, Sundance and Toronto.
