President stresses need for national government

President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday urged political parties to join an all-party administration to help the country out of its current dilemma, saying it is pointless to continue debating with slogans.

He made these statements yesterday during an address to United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) organisers, ministers and MPs  of the Kandy district, at the President’s House in Kandy.

The President also participated in religious rituals at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and called on the Ven. Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters.

“This is not a conventional political system. Parties dispute when using the conventional approach. This nation is under intense economic hardship, and because of the political shift brought about by this pressure, I was elected President,” the President said.

The President said the anti-government protests were initially organised to call for national political reforms, but unexpected groups of people had exploited the peaceful public uprising and had engaged in many crimes, he claimed.

“We are dealing with fascist terrorism at the moment. Under the guise of a protest, many groups of people set fire to houses and vehicles and destroyed or stole state property. ‘Ranil Go Home’ campaigns are currently underway, but I do not have a home to go to. If people are organising these campaigns, they should also bring some people to build my house,” Mr. Wickremesinghe remarked.

“We need to consider whether we should make these economic issues better or worse. The economy’s gross domestic product will reduce by seven per cent this year, and inflation will continue to rise across the nation,” he added, saying that the economy was still in crisis.
