Rajitha Dissanayake’s newest play ‘A Day in July 2019’ (2019 July Mase Dawasak) will make a much-awaited return to the Lionel Wendt stage on August 7 at 7.00 pm after a brief hiatus due to the current economic crisis.

The play—which premiered to full-houses in January this year—revolves around certain events that take place on an ordinary day, in a year that defined a decade. The play has been acclaimed by audiences and critics for its clever writing and subtle acting. Likewise, it has drawn praise for highlighting pressing socio-political issues as it examines the beginnings of the myriad crises and dilemmas we face as a country today.

Dissanayake ranks among the top original playwrights to emerge in Sri Lanka in the last 25 years. He has produced popular and award-winning plays like ‘Weeraya Merila’, ‘Sihina Horu Aran’, ‘Apahu Herenna Be’, ‘Bakamoona Veedi Basi’ and ‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’. His scripts focus on burning socio-political issues and have sparked debate, won awards, drawn crowds nationally and toured internationally.

The cast of ‘A Day in July 2019’ comprises seasoned stage and screen actors like Jayani Senanayake, Anuradha Mallawarachchi, SampathJ ayaweera, Prasadini Athapaththu, Sulochana Weerasinghe, Nalin Lusena, Gihan de Chickera and Anuk Fernando. Furthermore, the show is being supported by the Sunethra Bandaranaike Trust.

Music for the play is composed by Mahira Dissanayake, and the set is designed by Dharmapriya Dias and Anuradha Mallawarachchi. Make-up is by Priyantha Dissanayake, lighting design by Ranga Samarakoon and Anuradha Mallawarachchi and costume design by Nalin Lusena and Samadara Mabulage. Lenin Liyanage will be the stage manager.

Tickets for ‘A Day in July 2019’ available at the Lionel Wendt are priced at Rs 2500/-, 2000/-, 1500/-, 1000 and 700 (balcony). A special 20% discount will be offered to those who buy tickets from the venue from 1—3 August.
