Preparing for Hamlet-Machine

Walk into the third floor of the Kandy City Centre (KCC) today to catch up with the last day of A (Museum) Theatre by Clyde Chabot. This participatory installation, inspired by Heiner Muller’s play ‘Hamlet-Machine’ is a novel and creative concept.

Those who visit will get to pick a historical photo from the 20th century up to today, with one or several word (s) taken from Heiner Müllerʼs play in German –  translated into Sinhala, Tamil, English or French. The chosen photo is projected behind the visitor as he poses in front of the camera alone or with his family with the selected word(s). Thus the visitors create their self-portrait, which is captured by a photographer.

Part of the French Spring Festival and hosted by Alliance Française de Kandy, the Goethe Institut Colombo and the Peradeniya University, the aim is to create a political and poetical self-portrait, to “experiment a creative process, to create a micro-fiction”.

It invites the public to be in line with larger history. Says the French theatre company La Communauté Inavouable, “on the border between theatre and visual art, this installation enables the participants to reveal their generosity and sensitivity”.

Also, students and academic staff of the University of Peradeniya will invest in the installation space to create together with Clyde Chabot, a performance displaying the resonances of the play Hamlet-Machine in Sri Lanka today.

Today’s activity will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. The performance is billed for 3.30 p.m.
