Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalani Perera on Friday ordered the CID to remand former Kegalle Police Superintendent K. B. Keerthiratne until May 6 in connection with giving orders to shoot at anti-government protesters in Rambukkana and produce him before the Kegalle Magistrate thereafter.

SSP K.B. Keerthiratne was arrested at the Narahenpita Police Hospital on Thursday evening.

Theldeniya Magistrate Granville Fernando ordered to remand three other Police officers who were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the shooting, at the Kundasale hospital. The Magistrate also ordered the CID to admit the Police officers to the remand hospital and produce them before the Kegalle Magistrate on May 13.

When the case was called at the Kegalle Magistrate Court, the Officer in Charge of the CID’s murder investigation unit tendered medical reports of the Police officers who were in hospital. The counsel appearing for the aggrieved parties pointed out that an assistant Police superintendent and a Police sergeant who shot at the protesters, were yet to be arrested.

The counsel for the aggrieved parties told court that the Police officers who were admitted to the Police Hospital after the Kegalle magistrate court had delivered the order to the effect that the Chaminda Lakshan killing was indeed a murder by Police shooting.

The counsel said a bad precedent was set by the Police officers, who like politicians, were admitted to hospitals when there were possibilities of being arrested. They also requested the court to order all weapons, equipment and uniforms worn by the Police officers at the time of the incident to be handed over to the government analyst.

The Police shooting killed one person and wounded many unarmed protestors while they demanded fuel in Rambukkana on April 19.
