Safety device for motorbike riders

A motor mechanic based in Jaffna has produced a device which helps reduce the damage in motorcycle accidents.

Edwin Morris, a motor vehicle repairman for 30 years, who made the device, says his motive was to reduce the number of fatal road accidents.

The device, when fitted on the helmet and motorcycle, prevents the rider from starting the bike, if the helmet is not on.

The device has been developed with a censor linked to the power supply. The mechanism is designed so that the motorcycle will run only if the rider has the helmet on and the helmet strap is fastened.

Mr Morris said he had been trying for more than five years to find a way to prevent motorcycle accidents, where the rider is often without a helmet, and was now able to do so successfully.
