The current administration needs to step down from office and allow a competent set of people to assume office in line with the Constitution, the University of Moratuwa Teachers Association (UMTA) said.

In a letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the UMTA said the current administration has demonstrated that it is incompetent in handling the current economic crisis and resulting ill-effects.

“All ministries need to appoint permanent secretaries from the ministries themselves based on expertise and experience in the relevant fields. Afterwards, it is paramount to appoint independent expert committees to make decisions to restore normalcy in each of the subject areas of the ministries. The expert committees should have short-term and medium-term plans and monitoring mechanisms in all their activities. The committees must be appointed based on meritocracy,” the association urged the President.

Strengthening independent commissions such as elections, public service, national Police, bribery and corruption, finance and delimitation, and the removal of barriers that hinder the agriculture and industry sectors with immediate effect to ensure food security and revive the economy were among proposals submitted by the professionals.

“Maintain the quality and the continuity of the healthcare and education systems to ensure a healthy and an empowered nation. Conduct presidential and general elections as soon as it is feasible in alignment with the elections-related financial regulations and other rules,” the UMTA members said.

They also proposed restructuring the education system to cater to capacity building needs of the nation to catalyse economic growth.

“Integrate aspects of value-added exports and import substitution, such as innovation, use of local raw material, design and manufacture, and supply chain optimisation to all national policies,” the university teacher’s organisation suggested.
