Navy Sports Club thumped Army Sports Club by 22-6 in a Plate segment game of the Nippon Paints Club Rugby League 2022 played at Welisara yesterday. Scoring from three tries, two conversions and a penalty, the Sailors led the halftime 19-6, and allowed the Soldiers a couple of scoring opportunities off two penalties.

Navy opened scoring in the 10th minute when lock Adeesha Weeratunga took the honour of landing their first try, as centre Stevan Sansoni added the extra points. Flanker Radeesha Seneviratne scored Navy’s second try in the 17th minute, and with Sansoni’s conversion they comfortably extended the lead to 14-0. Flanker Nirosh Perera joined the party to score Navy’s third and final try in the 29th minute, which went unconverted.

The Soldiers had the privilege of hitting back with two penalties in the 32nd and 39th minutes, as both kicks were successfully taken by flanker Tharindu Madushan. Both teams failed to go against the other in the second half except when the Sailors forced an error on the Soldiers, which came in favour of them very early after the resumption. Sansoni took the kick to help Navy extend the lead to 22-6, which remained for the rest of the 35 minutes.
