The adventure sporting event Raid Amazones held annually is expected to generate Euros 15 million media exposure for Sri Lanka in Europe becoming the largest event since the pandemic, organisers of the event said.

At the media briefing held in Colombo on Tuesday the national carrier SriLankan Airlines along with the French Embassy and Connaissance de Ceylan announced that the Raid Amazones will attract over 550 participants competing this year in Sri Lanka as two teams in two stages with the venue being Sigiriya.

The first leg will take place from March 13-23 and the second leg is scheduled from March 27- April 6 this year in the popular women’s annual adventure trail that originated in France. Participants will compete in a range of challenges such as orienteering, mountain biking, canoeing, riding, running and archery against the backdrop of Sigiriya.

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said the event will send a strong message to the world at a time when Sri Lanka is seeing a recovery in tourism and will help accelerate tourism.

He noted that everyone has put their faith in tourism for recovery of the economy and the aim of the government is to generate higher arrivals compared to those that arrived in the country prior to the pandemic.

The event is held with a view to giving participants the chance of also discovering the country through its unique landscape, people and culture.

The event will play host to global media and an entire entourage of persons involved in the carrying out of the event.

The event had been stopped for two years due to the pandemic and though there is no prize money involved the competition is said to be more about endurance and discovery.

A large number of family and friends of the participants will be staying back to holiday in
Sri Lanka following the conclusion of the event, it was pointed out.
