Battle of Golds ends in a tame draw
The 71st Battle of the Gold big match encounter between St. Sebastian’s College and Prince of Wales College, ended in a draw at the De Soysa Stadium yesterday.
Resuming from their overnight total of 53-3, the Cambrians were restricted to 173 with Pasindu Pathum hitting 54 runs. Kalana Sandeep claimed four scalps, while Senith Fernando picked two wickets, to help St. Sebastian’s gain 81 runs after the first innings.
With the help of two quick-fire half centuries from Yashan Avishka (67) and Sukitha Prasanna (52n.o.), and an equally swift knock from Bihanga Mendis (42), St. Sebastian’s declared their second innings at 167 for the loss of two wickets, just facing 37 overs. This left the Cambrians a target of 248 with very little time remaining. A draw was obvious, as neither team had any passage or time to create an opening of an uncertain win, thus ending the game in yet another draw.
Sandesh Fernando hit 66 for the Sebs while Sumalka Fernando bagged five wickets for the Cambrians on the opening day. In reply to St. Sebastian’s first innings total of 254 runs, Prince of Wales replied with 53-3 after facing 15 overs to end the first day.
The Limited Overs encounter between the two schools will be played today at the same venue.
