What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse environmental effects, such as pollution, as well as improving environmental quality.

Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat trapping gasses. The effects of climate change heighten competition for resources such as land, food, and water, fueling socioeconomic tensions and, increasingly often, leading to mass displacement.

How can Environmental Engineers help?

As addressed above, climate change is at a crisis point, but Environmental Engineers address such global issues as well as sustainability, waste disposal, water security, utility distribution, pollution and more. Graduates are highly sought after in government and private sectors to provide innovative solutions to these environmental challenges. As an Environmental engineer, you will be equipped to assess project impacts on air, water and soil, and to design strategies that minimize adverse effects.

Environmental Engineering as a career

Environmental engineering is a field deeply concerned with the effects of climate change and human impact on our resources and environment.

As these threats grow, so does the demand for professionals in this field. Within the engineering profession, environmental engineers are driven by a desire to make big, impactful changes – not only on people’s lives, but on our wider world.

These are the people who help big corporations – like mining companies – cut down their negative environmental impacts.

Where can you study Environmental Engineering?

If you’re interested in Environmental Engineering, Deakin University offers a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Honours) which is a globally recognised four year degree. As a Deakin Environmental Engineering graduate, you will become a highly skilled graduate ready to tackle global environmental issues such as climate change, sustainability and pollution. You will gain knowledge across environmental engineering industry areas which will enable you to develop solutions-led technical and professional skills to put you in high demand in this future focused field. You’ll gain industry experience by completing at least 30 to 60 days of practical work experience in an engineering workplace, developing and enhancing your understanding of the environmental engineering profession, possible career outcomes, and the opportunity to establish valuable professional networks.

Start locally and transfer to Deakin Australia later

There is also an option for Sri Lankan students passionate about Engineering to commence their studies at Royal Institute Colombo (RIC) and transfer to Deakin, Australia for years 3 and 4. The end outcomes (the qualification) are the same, but the Pathway offers many benefits. The obvious being the saving on tuition and living costs.

Engineers of Australia Accreditation

The Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Honours) has been designed in accordance with Engineers Australia professional accreditation requirements. Deakin has been awarded provisional accreditation for the Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Honours) by Engineers Australia (EA).
