View(s):

Around 147 years ago the Gregory Lake project in Nuwara Eliya was initiated at a cost of 1200 sterling pounds. Since then it has remained a tourist hub, and there are four parks surrounding the picturesque Lake.

There is a boat service operating for tourists, and there are different avenues of employment at the site. The Nuwara Eliya municipality gets revenue from the project, which needs many staff for maintenance work.

The lake is fed by adjacent waterways such
as Nanu Oya and Thalagala Oya and the surrounding waterfalls.

Today the waterways are blocked and the lake bunds are full of river sand deposits. The water bed is covered with aquatic plants.

According to Nuwara Eliya Mayor Chandana Lal Karunaratna a programme to dredge the lake has been launched in collaboration with the Irrigation Department.

An allocation of Rs 170 million has been given for the improvements.
