Korfball Sri Lanka in its endeavour to promote the sport in all parts of the country, introduced the game to the youth at the Beach Park in Trincomalee, through a orientation training programme held last week.

With much enthusiasm among the youth to attend the programme, the organisers were compelled to limit participation to 50 in keeping with health guidelines.

The introduction programme was conducted in Trincomalee by a team headed by Pushpakumara Madurapperuma, the Secretary of Korfball Sri Lanka, while former physiotherapist of the Under-23 national  team of Netherlands, Jose Van Nunspeet, who introduced the game to Sri Lanka in 2013, attended as the guest of honour.

Korfball is a mixed gender sport with similarities to netball and basketball, and is played by two teams of eight players comprising of four females and four males in each team. The objective is to throw the ball through a bottomless basket that is mounted on a 3.5 metres high pole. It is a contactless and fast game, as unlike netball or basketball one has to shoot before being defended.

Korfball has been played for over 120 years around the world after a Dutch schoolteacher named Nico Broekhuysen came up with it in 1902. The International Korfball Federation was founded in 1933 and at present Korfball is being played in over 70 countries.
