Rainfall could decrease, but expect afternoon thunderstorms in most parts of the country

The prevailing low-pressure atmospheric disturbance southeast of Sri Lanka and over the southwest parts of the Bay of Bengal is expected to get weakened, leading to a reduction in the rainfall, the Meteorology Department has said.

However, the department warns that the atmospheric conditions could still bring about afternoon thunderstorms over most parts of the island during the next few days and lead to the gradual establishment of the North-East monsoon.

Floods in Vavuniya

Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected in some areas while showers or thundershowers could occur in the Northern and North-Central Provinces and in the districts of Trincomalee, Galle and Matara, the department said, urging the people to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

One person was killed in Mullaitivu and another reported missing in Batticaloa as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds has been lashing Sri Lanka since last week.

About 1,270 people from 367 families have been affected by the heavy rainfall, strong winds and landslides, the Disaster Management Centre reports.

Two houses were destroyed, while 40 houses sustained partial damages due to the heavy rains.

The Irrigation Department’s Water Management Director D. Abeysiriwardena said most of the upstream catchment areas of Deduru Oya, Rajangana, Yan Oya, and Pavattikulam had received considerable rainfall and this could result in flooding of low-lying areas.

Residents and those travelling through these areas have been requested to be vigilant against the threat of floods.
