State fertiliser companies to amalgamate

Government has plans to amalgamate the two state-run fertiliser companies in a bid to restructure them and ensure that they will add value without duplicating the workload.

Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage pointed out, to the Business Times, that they have received proposals from countries like Norway, US and India to assist in the provision of the technical know-how for the manufacture of organic fertiliser, and in the restructure of the two companies.

The minister explained that following a cabinet decision they were looking at amalgamating the two companies. He noted that the companies will manufacture fertiliser, import and distribute organic fertiliser in the future.

He noted that investors will join in a joint venture and they are currently working on it and this is based on a cabinet decision taken about a year back.

Minister Aluthgamage said the government will not be investing anything as they have the land, storage facilities and the market.

Ceylon Fertiliser Company (CFC) sources said that a restructuring of the CFC and the Colombo Commercial Fertilizer company will be carried out in a bid to amalgamate them into one company.

It was pointed out that they would in future, according to government plans, be involved only in the entire process of providing organic fertiliser to the Sri Lankan farmer.

At the moment there are manufacturers and then the two companies check on their quality and carry out the necessary distribution, it was noted.

Plans are worked out to ensure that a professional company will be involved in the restructuring process to ensure that the two companies do not incur “unnecessary expenditure to carry out the same operation.”
