A leading girls school in Kandy and residents in the area have in a letter to the UDA protested against a high-rise building that they allege poses a danger to the school, especially during the prevailing weather conditions.

The letter signed by the principal of Mahamaya Girls’ College, the school’s development committee and residents, pointed out that the building had gone over and above the stipulated four storeys and was now 7 floors high and that it could collapse on to the school hostel with imminent danger to the children.

It is alleged that the building on Mahamaya Mawatha had got approval for four floors including the ground floor, but it has now gone up to 7 floors. The building also has no basement it is alleged.

Profesor S.B.Abeykoon, a member of the task force appointed by the Central Province Governor, following the collapse of a building last year in Buwelikada that killed a family of three, has categorically stated that this building violates existing regulations.

The letter also points out that the building could aggravate the traffic congestion on Mahamaya Mawatha, a 12-14 foot narrow road.
