Strong winds and downpours are forecast to continue across the country until the next weekend.

Meteorology Department forecaster Srimal Herath said the south-western regions, including Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces as well as Galle and Matara districts will experience strong winds due to the Southwest Monsoon.

Some areas in the Northwest may experience heavy rains until Sunday. Heavy showers exceeding 100 millimetres can be expected.

Strong winds of 40-50 kilometres per hour can be expected in the western slope of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

In the coastal areas, the wind speed could reach 70 kmph, extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Puttalam and Galle. The coastal areas from Mannar to Hambantota via Puttalam and Galle will be rough at times, the forecast said. Other coastal areas will experience fairly rough weather at times. The navy and the fishing community are being told to be vigilant.

However, the National Building Research Organisation has not mentioned any serious situation related to the water levels of the main reservoirs.

The Disaster Management agency has reported that residents of the Northern, North Central and Eastern regions have faced difficulties due to strong winds and lightning during the week.
