The Education Ministry is considering three options to provide the 2020 G.C.E. O/L results to students, which have been held up due to trade union actions of teachers.

A senior Education Ministry official held discussions this week, with the regional education directors about the plan to release the results.

The delay in conducting practical examinations for students who completed theoretical papers for aesthetic studies has forced the Examinations Commissioner to put the results of some 620,000 students, on hold.

Accordingly, one of the proposals put forward is to release exam results with the current markings and complete the practical exams later when schools are fully operational and teachers return.

Another proposal put forward was taking into consideration the evaluations of these students done earlier and provide them marks from these evaluations, to complete the issue of results.

The third option under consideration is releasing the results without taking into consideration the practical exams.

However, the third option will affect a section of the students, particularly those who are better prepared for practical exams.

Education Times learns that the officials were favouring the first option to conduct the practical exams later when schools are fully operational, as the impact on the students would be less.

The inability to hold practical exams in view of the teachers strike was spoken about, at a discussion between the new Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and trade union representatives on Friday.

Union members said the Minister gave a positive response and they are expecting for another proposal to be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

However, Education ministry officials said they are not taking chances and are considering the three options for the release of the O/L results as there is a demand from parents and students to obtain the results soon.

The delay in releasing the results affects students who have to register to sit other examinations as well to enter foreign educational institutions.
