A group of senior police officers paid a visit to the Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera on Thursday to brief him on the alleged unjust treatment they were being subjected to.

The group of senior officers had all been serving in areas where the Easter Sunday terror attacks occurred and had criminal charges or disciplinary action recommended against them by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) which investigated the attacks.

The group of officers, who numbered around 20, included Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, SDIG (Administration) Nandana Munasinghe, and DIG in charge of Nuwara Eliya Chandana Athukorala.

They told the Mahanayaka Thera that they had been unjustly singled out for punishment simply because they happened to be on duty in the areas where the attacks took place. The officers stressed that the previous Yahapalana Government had ignored repeated intelligence warnings about an impending attack and this was what led to the tragedy.

They asked the Mahanayaka Thera to raise the matter with those in authority, claiming that if actions were initiated against them, it would lead to a breakdown in morale in the entire police force.
