Athletes who have already qualified for the World Junior Athletics Championships, emerging star Medhani Jayamanne, Tharushi Karunaratne, Shanika Lakshani and Isuru Kaushalya will be in action at the World Junior Selection Trial to be held on July 27 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Medhani Jayamanne of Lumbini College is the latest to qualify, as she reached the standards with the timing of 24.08 beating India’s famous Hima Das in the 200m final at the All-India Inter-State Athletics Championships concluded in Punjab last month.

Earlier, Shanika Lakshani of Holy Cross College, Gampaha, clocked 2:07.02 in the 800m, while Tharushi Karunaratne of A. Ratnayake Central College, Walala, timed 2:07.46 in 800m and Isuru Kaushalya of Ananda Shasthralaya, Matugama, sprinted the 400m dash in 47.24 at the Junior Championships held in April this year at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Apart from the above qualified quartet, Sri Lanka Athletics expects three more athletes to reach the qualifying standards of the World Junior Championships to be held in Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya from August 17 to 22.

Performances of athletes from October 2019 have been taken into consideration for the selection of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships 2021 and Sri Lanka Athletics is conducting this trial to name the qualified athletes before the competition deadline on July 31.
