Govt. should prioritise vaccination of public school teachers: CTU

View(s):

The Government should prioritise the inoculation of the COVID-19 vaccine for teachers serving in public schools, to prepare them for the reopening of schools, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said last week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said it is important that the 25,950 teachers serving in national and provincial schools be vaccinated so schools can start functioning as soon as possible.

“This will enable the teachers to go out and teach in classrooms without fear,” he said.

He said this will also enable the Education Ministry to take a decision to re-open schools soon.

An earlier request made by the CTU to have around 12,000 exam supervisors and administrators vaccinated before the 2020 O/L exams held in March this year, was ignored.

The Education Forum of Sri Lanka (EFSL) too stressed on the importance of vaccinating all teachers before schools re-open. This was one of several recommendations the EFSL made to the Government on re-opening schools. - CC
