Govt. schools see a drop in student numbers

Student numbers in Government schools had reduced last year, while the student numbers in Government approved private schools and special schools had increased last year in comparison with figures for 2019. This was revealed in the Central Bank’s annual report for 2020.

The Central Bank report highlighted the reduction of Government school students from 4,061,653 students in the year 2019 to 4,031,865 last year.

The number of Government schools was 10,165 in 2019 and it had reduced to 10,155 last year. While the number of national schools (373) and primary schools (3891) remained the same, secondary schools reduced from 6,274 to 6,264.

Meanwhile, student numbers in private and schools for children with special needs increased from 138,067 to 138,859.

Statistics in the report also showed that new admissions to schools too saw a decline from 328,632 in 2019 to 318,179 last year.

The report also said that teachers trained at teacher training colleges last year have decreased drastically from 2,954 in 2019 to 973 last year.

The same situation was visible in national colleges of education where the number of teacher trainees reduced from 16,237 in 2019 to 12,373 in 2020.
