Genetic sequencing performed this week has found the Indian variant of the COVID-19 virus in one sample sent by a private facility in Colombo, the Sunday Times learns.

“The sample is from a person who has come from overseas,” said Prof. Neelika Malavige, the Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Prof. Malavige’s laboratory is the only one which conducts genetic sequencing.
