Army and Air Force were declared joint champions of the inaugural hockey tournament organised by the Colombo Municipal Council and played for the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy after the final was stopped midway towards the end due to bad light at the Astro Turf in Colombo yesterday.

The thrilling final ended in a 1-all stalemate, as Army and Air Force scored a goal each in the dying stage of the game, before the game was stalled. After a long discussion between the organising committee and the umpires, both the teams were declared joint-champions.

In the third place playoff, Navy recorded an emphatic 5-2 win against Old Nalandians’ Hockey Club (ONHC).

In the semi-finals, Army marched forward with a convincing victory against ONHC 6-0, while the Airmen had a trouble-free entry to the final, beating Navy 3-0.
