The Education Ministry’s proposal to broadcast the Gurugedera programme on national and regional channels to school children for wider coverage was approved by the Cabinet last week.

Under this proposal, the programmes will be telecast via ‘Nethra’ and ‘Eye Channel’ will also be aired on radio channels.

The move is expected to enable rural children who do not have television coverage in their areas to access the programme.

School children will also be able listen to the programme through a mobile phone.

The ‘gurugedera’ teaching programme began last year for students from grade three to grade 13 to teach children who had been deprived of schooling for more than a year.

Last week the Government decided to continue with the gurugedera television programme even though schools reopened for this academic year.
