Sri Lanka’s leading plastic recycler Eco Spindles (Pvt.) Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of BPPL Holdings PLC, was recently ranked among the Global Recycling Foundation’s top ten #RecyclingHeroes of 2021.

This achievement marks a monumental milestone for the local recycling giant, as the Global Recycling Foundation meticulously processes nominations received by progressive companies, individuals and communities in the recycling space, from across the globe, Eco Spindles said on Tuesday.

Eco Spindles was ranked alongside nine other contributors in the global recycling arena, namely, Rien Voets (Holland), Green Axis (Nigeria), Abdi Hirsi (Somalia), Bokashi Bran (Pty) Ltd (South Africa), EcoAct (Tanzania), International WeLoveU Foundation (Korea), Dgrade (Dubai), Eco-Train (Canada), and Metal Shredder (Hungary).

“Being recognised for our work at an international level and being ranked among nine other global leaders in recycling is indeed a significant feat for us. Over the course of last year, we were able to recycle over 81 million PET bottles. We aim to increase this significantly this year,” noted Dr. Anush Amarasinghe, Managing Director of BPPL Holdings in a media release. Eco Spindles plays a substantial role in influencing the collection of waste PET plastic bottles, recycling and creating value-added products such as polyester yarn for apparel manufacturers and monofilaments for brush makers worldwide.

Last year, Eco Spindles was recognised among the top 100 #RecyclingHeroes by the Global Recycling Foundation, and this year’s achievement is a testament to the recycler’s efforts in sustaining and empowering the local recycling community and, introducing innovation to plastic waste management.

“While we keep working towards the common goals of strengthening the local recycling industry and encouraging immaculate solid waste management in the country, we believe that our continuing efforts and innovations will undoubtedly enable us to achieve these goals, and showcase Sri Lanka as a global leader in the recycling space,” Dr. Amarasinghe added.

Eco Spindles sources their PET bottle waste through its 400-strong network of collectors. In view of Global Recycling Day this year, the company launched their new “Waste 2 Value” app that is capable of locating around 300 plastic waste bins around the island, providing ease of access to anybody looking to dispose their plastic waste the right way.
