Three players — national chess champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Ananda College, former national chess champion, Minul Doluweera of Royal College and a national team player Theekshana Denuwan of Ananda College — shared the lead with 6 points each out of 7 games after the first session of the 8th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2021 last weekend.

Ranindu beat Pesandu Liyanage of D.S. Senanayake College, Minul beat Jude Dorison of Jaffna and Theekshana beat A.A.C.B. Amarasinghe to stay on the top. Three of them has taken two draws and four wins.

Earlier, all four of them, Ranindu drew with Minul while Theekshana also drew with Isara Banindu Dahanayake of Royal College. The overnight leader, S. Sivathanujan of Kokavil Hindu College, lost to Pesandu Liyanage in the sixth round.

The 8th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2021, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), is in progress from January 28 and ends today under strict health guidelines. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka will offer a cash award of Rs. 110,000 to the winners with other attractive awards.

All games are webcasted live in each round and a live streaming of first session of games will commence on Sunday afternoon while finals will be covered in full through the CFSL YouTube Channel.

Elath Mathanga de Silva beat Senuka Ashvin Ahangama (D.S. Senanayake College), Isara Banindu Dahanayake (Royal College) beat Mohammed Nabil Nazar (Gateway International School, Dehiwala) and S. Sivathanujan beat Madushan Sameera Dissanayake (Super Fighters CC) in three other games played in the seventh round.

The seventh to 11th rounds of the event was held on February 4 and 5 and the Double Round semi-finals and finals will be played through the weekend. The seventh round started on Thursday from 9.00am at the CFSL Headquarters
in Nugegoda.
