Many a river to cross

Amidst the many discussions about developing interior road networks and carpeted roads, for these students in the Arachchikattuwa area, it remains a daily struggle to get to school and back due to the bad road conditions.

During the rainy season particularly, it is difficult for these schoolchildren to travel on the existing roads. Though a bridge was constructed across the lagoon, the children have to cover a longer distance to get to school if they use that path.

“Our children have to travel through a muddy road when they use the existing path,’ parent Renuka Niroshani said. It is a common site to see students remove their shoes or slippers and get to school.

The villagers appeal that the authorities pay attention to the road conditions of the area, especially the paths to reach the housing scheme where they live. They point out that the lack of proper roads would have a bearing on the education of the students, as it becomes harder for them to reach school.

The villagers now living in Naguleliya are initially from the coastal line; they lost their homes to sea erosion and were resettled here a few years ago. Their lives seem on the brink of getting washed away again.
