SLAAA calls off John Tarbat Athletic Meet

The 87th Sir John Tarbat Athletics Championship, conducted annually by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA), has been called off indefinitely. The four-day meet was scheduled to take place from December 21 to 24 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, but now the meet is unlikely to be held even in the coming months.

The Ministry of Education had earlier given the green light to conduct sports events, as school sports activities were on the verge of gradually coming back to life. Track and field events were among the first of sports to resume after the initial six-month break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However with the latest trend in the outbreak of the pandemic, Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA) secretary Neville Rodrigo confirmed that the 87th Sir John Tarbat Athletic Championship is highly unlikely to take place with the present situation.

In addition the SLSAA has also decided to call off the Junior John Tarbat Athletic Championship and the Sri Lanka Schools Colours Awards Ceremony, as they hope the pandemic situation to fully clear and obtain necessary permission before organising future events.
