The Sunday Times Business Club (STBC) last week held a virtual discussion among its members on the topic of “COVID-19 – Recent Developments”.

The main speaker at the event was Dr. Hemantha Herath, Deputy Director-General, Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health.

He spoke in detail about the developments about the COVID-19 pandemic since its outbreak in January 2020 arising out of an infected Chinese tourist who then recovered. Dr. Herath also traced the history of infectious diseases and how the health authorities have responded to each outbreak.

He message was clear: The public has to take precautions in terms of social distancing, avoid crowds, wash the hands regularly for 20 seconds (each time) and regularly wear a mask when in a public space and when coming into contact with others. Several questions were asked by STBC members from the health specialist pertaining to when this pandemic would end, the progress in a vaccine, among other matters.

Like many other clubs and associations during the pandemic, the STBC has been having many virtual discussions in the absence of face-to-face public gatherings which have been advised against by health authorities.
