Some High Court judges who were not considered for promotions that were granted recently have made representations to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya claiming their seniority had been ignored.

The promotions were granted after six vacancies were created in the Court of Appeal due to the implementation of the 20th Amendment under which the number of the judges was increased.

The Sunday Times learns that the judges had appealed to the Chief Justice after the Parliamentary Council made their recommendations saying they were subjected to the observations of the Chief Justice.

They have noted that some of the names not nominated by the Chief Justice too had been included in the final list.

Meanwhile with the increase of the number of judges in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal by 14 members a problem had arisen regarding infrastructure facilities for the courts.

The Sunday Times learns there are moves to acquire part of the Justice Ministry.

The ceremonial sittings for the newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal will take place on Tuesday.
