Colombo’s five-star hotels yesterday stepped up COVID-19 precautionary measures, including increasing PCR tests, after a hotel employee tested positive.

Two leading hotel confirmed yesterday that  a staff member each had been diagnosed with COVID-19. “Upon detection of possible symptoms, the team member was admitted to a designated medical facility and the hotel has taken further precautionary measures to curtail the spread of the virus,” a statement from one of the hotels said.

Hoteliers Association Chairman Sanath Ukwatte told the Sunday Times all five star hotels had taken several precautionary steps.

Another Hotel had closed down the main ball room.

Mr Ukwatte said that at the moment there was no decision to close down hotels. He explained that such a decision had to be taken by the health authorities.

“We as the hoteliers association adhere to the given guidelines and fully corporate,” he said.

“The hotel industry has been badly hit by the pandemic, we had fewer bookings this year and apart from that we are forced to cancel events held in hotels as a result of the pandemic,” he said.
