He said the southwest monsoon was still active although this time of the year usually experienced the inter-monsoon conditions.

“By Tuesday, the rains may intensify,” he added.

The department predicts that showers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the southern districts of Galle and Matara.

Strong gusty winds about (50-60) kmph can be expected across the island, particularly in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces, the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts and the western slopes of the central hills.

On Wednesday, several areas experienced cyclonic winds. Several houses suffered damage in Mahaweli Mulla, Buduruwagala and Neluwagala when the heavy winds blew across the Wellawaya-Buttala area.

Monaragala District Disaster Management Centre official Sudesh Jayaratne said compensation would be provided to those whose suffered property damage.

Several districts also experienced power failures due to the bad weather.

Ceylon Electricity Board officials said they were taking necessary measures to restore power with minimum inconvenience to the people.
