Teacher union says ICT has no department director

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), a popular subject of most Ordinary Level and Advance Level students, has no proper In-Service Advisor at the Education Department, a teacher union has claimed.  The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the subject followed by about 30,000 students required an In-service Advisor (ISA) to monitor the syllabus and give instruction to teachers.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said that although ICT was introduced as an Ordinary Level subject in 2008 and an Advanced Level subject in 2010, teachers got little or no instruction from the Education Department.

It is learnt that in 2016, a director post for the subject was approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC) but so far the department had failed to fill the vacancy, he said. “This is causing much hardship to teachers and students. We urge the department to appoint a director immediately,” Mr. Stalin said.
