To prevent suicide, light a candle for Sumithrayo

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 every year since 2003, to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. The theme for this year is “Working Together to Prevent Suicide”.

Sumithrayo, the government-approved charity set up in 1974 by the late Joan de Mel, was a beacon of hope to the lonely and distressed during the COVID-19 lockdown that kept people indoors. Uncertainty and loneliness loomed large on most people’s minds. When everything shut down, Sumithrayo continued to offer relief and solace to the distressed through phone and email befriending.

Suicide prevention is the primary objective of Sumithrayo. But anyone can walk in with woes that weigh heavy on their minds — marital, relationship, family, employment, sickness or any other problems and have confidential emotional support through befriending. Sumithrayo’s outreach arm Mel Medura helps with various forms of addiction; alcohol, drugs, internet and porn.

Sumithrayo is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, including holidays and Poya days. Its service is provided free of charge and no prior appointment is needed. A friendly smile and a hot cup of tea welcome all who walk through the door. For the benefit of the people who are reluctant or unable to visit their office, phone, email and Skype befriending is offered.

On September 10, join Sumithrayo and many others across the world playing their part in the prevention of suicide. Light a Candle near a window at 8 p.m. as a symbol of support for suicide prevention. For many it is a means of remembering a loved one.
